How can we give more to the city and users in the case of projects with high functional requirements such as hospitals? This is the question from which we approach our healthcare projects. Our answer is to add environmental values such as natural light, spatial amplitude and landscape integration to a highly technological and efficient organisation.

The new Logroño Specialities and Major Outpatient Surgery Centre will be located very close to the city centre, next to two other health buildings, the Nursing School and a Specialities Centre named CARPA. Our proposal, presented in the public competition, consolidates the healthcare function of the block, reorganising the accesses to the project. In addition, the project defines a solid volumetry that integrates the brightness of the surrounding environment into the interior.

The new centre will have two main programmes: operating theatres and external consulting rooms. Based on this fundamental functional differentiation, the building is divided into two blocks.
A lower rectangular volume contains the operating theatres and related areas. Above this block, there is an upper body designed for the external consulting rooms, whose volumetry is modelled to receive a large amount of light. This defines the external shape of the building in its upper part as a comb.
This dual personality of the building is reflected in the materiality of its façades. A stone-like volume contains the more controlled spaces of the operating theatres. An aerial façade envelops the consulting rooms.

The three-storey foyer flooded with natural light welcomes patients and adds personality to the centre. As in our other healthcare projects, warm materials and shapes create a cosy atmosphere.
An optimised organisation of functions, combined with volumetric operations that open the building to the exterior and thus expand the spatiality of the interiors, give shape to our proposal for the Logroño Specialities and Major Outpatient Surgery Centre.
