AGi architects have shared their experience in healthcare architecture at the Architect’s Congress at Building Healthcare Exhibition & Conferences, held from 8-10 June 2015 in Dubai. Theevent has focused on the design of a healing environment and how it impacts patient safety, operations, and the financial success of a healthcare facility.

Nasser Abulhasan, Principal and Founder of AGi architects, has revealed the key factors on the modular design guiding the Cardiac Research & Rehabilitation Center, currently under construction in Kuwait.

For AGi architects, the principal goal when designing healthcare buildings is the improvement of the experience of their main users: patients and healthcare staff. According to Nasser, “a good healthcare building is one in which the users feel they are receiving the required care without noticing that they are in a healthcare environment. This can be achieved by a highly developed program and a well-designed spatial organization, focusing on the user’s wellbeing”.

The design of the Kuwait Cardiac Research & Rehabilitation Center was purposefully guided to provide daylight, natural ventilation and pleasant views, in order to contribute to the user’s comfort and health. This was created with a series of courtyards of varying sizes that puncture the building at different levels. Also, the relationships created between public and private spaces through well-organized circulation paths help make the operation of the building easier and more intuitive for both patients and staff.

Definitely, “a comfortable and pleasant experience for the patients, alongside an efficient workspace for the staff was AGi architects’ central concern when designing The Kuwait Cardiac Research & Rehabilitation Center”, commented Nasser Abulhasan.

Changing hospitals’ public image through healthcare architecture

Kuwait Cardiac Research & Rehabilitation Center is a reflection on hospitals public image. Usually hospitals have negative connotations; therefore we make a proposal that will lead to a new and positive feeling.

The exterior façade is the most relevant element and the first connection with the patient. The interior is organized like a small city with different scales and hierarchies. The “main streets” are the corridors where patients can be assisted in the different receptions. The main waiting areas are like a Square with direct view to the main courtyards. The consults units are like apartments. The patients are received in a “living room” and addressed by a doctor in a private room.
