New Dune is a project for a resort located around a wave pool on the Costa del Sol. Our approach focused on enhancing the whole surfing experience. We wanted to create a place that would evoke the same sensations as surfing in the ocean.
The surfing experience begins long before the actual surfing. Arriving at the beach, preparing the equipment, waiting for the perfect wave, contemplating the sea and resting after catching the wave are a very important part of the intense sensations experienced while practicing this sport.
It is not about making a building, but about building a place.
With these sensations in mind, the premises for New Dune were to build, connect and experiment. We began by organizing the topography of the complex to create a landscape. We were inspired by the dune coastline. We adapted the project to the sloping terrain, causing minimal disturbance. The topography was organized by means of sinuous walls that formed terraces. These walls were made of stabilized rammed earth.
We worked on the relationship with the landscape and the views so that it would be changing and surprising. The senses were activated by building a network of paths with natural materials. The views were framed through the different paths. Turns in the paths and gaps in the walls played with the feelings of openness and intimacy. At the highest levels, vantage points were generated to enjoy the beauty of the landscape.
The wave pool is the main element of the complex, and is located at the lowest level. All around it is organized a varied landscaped border where to enjoy the in and out of the waves. There we can relax on the beach, the Sunrise Beach. Children can play in the activity area, while we have a drink at the Beach Bar, or who prefers, skate in the Skate Park. Other architectural elements, designed in wood and with a Californian spirit, such as the Beach Hut and the Bleachers, make the surfing experience complete. They create the same ambience found on the best beaches around the world.
The dune landscape of the coastline inspires New Dune.
The beach is surrounded by a building with an undulating wooden roof and wide eaves. Its walls are made of rammed earth. The natural materials and the soft curved geometry create a relaxing and organic feeling. Here, the restaurant is in contact with the waves, and also you can find the store and the surf school.
Different types of accommodations were designed, matching the different guest profiles of the resort. On the first level behind the main building, we located the beach cabins, which enjoy an outdoor lounge to relax with the scenery and the sound of the waves. In front of them, the coastal landscape is recreated in the rocks and plant species.
Behind them, the First Line Cabins extend towards the front porch. More sheltered, we designed a set of Patio Houses, up to 100 square meters, which enjoy a cozy patio. Located on a rear level, the Tree Cabins are elevated to take in the views of the complex.
Finally, there is an Aparthotel where the beach vistas are the absolute protagonist. The materiality of all these housing typologies combines light and warm colors with the use of wood and natural materials, large windows with wooden carpentry and outdoor areas covered by lattices that sift the sun through their beams.
Nature, plus lifestyle, equals a unique experience. Evoking these sensations in all the architecture of New Dune is what we have sought in the project. We have designed a unique and sustainable place that seeks to create the sensation of being on one of the best beaches in the world. New Dune articulates a nature of its own to bring the surfing experience to the Costa del Sol.
